All of a sudden, the economy gets better….the deals start coming in, and the entire sales team is happy. You’re the manager there, and everything is groovy. Salespeople call to chat….pretty soon you’re chatting about the nice “move” you did on that last call.
Then, you think back about 2 months ago. The economy was crap, and the deals were not coming in. Nobody chatted back then. And you, you were making ominous statements about performance….and asking people, “So, whattaya gonna sell this month.”
Do the ominous statements lead to the big sales this month? Maybe it just was the economy? Do you want to be the manager everyone bitches about when they finally leave? What happens is you are just a buddy to everyone and no one sells?
What to do when? I guess it’s important to just be aware of what you are doing. When you are frustrated, make sure it stays in your office. Be deliberate in your feedback – know when you are pushing someone and know when they just need someone to talk to.
